Research Council Rankings Move Up
Entomology is among top two programs in the nation.
The National Research Council (NRC) report that evaluated 27 of UCR’s doctoral programs showed an upward trend. “We have many excellent faculty and excellent graduate programs, as indicated by the rankings of 14 of our graduate programs in the top third in the country,” said Dallas Rabenstein, executive vice chancellor and provost. “These rankings provide a strong base from which to achieve our goals and aspirations as set out in our strategic plan.”

UCR Honors Friends and Alumni While Raising Scholarship Money
Three UC Riverside alumni and two campus friends will be honored at the 2nd Annual Chancellor’s Dinner to benefit UCR students on Oct. 23 at the Highlander Union Building. The celebration will begin at 6 p.m. with a reception featuring several UCR student performing groups. Dinner will be served in the third floor ballroom. The program offers the presentation of the 2010 Alumni Awards of Distinction and the UCR Medallion. It is open to the public. Cost is $125 with the goal of raising money for student scholarships. The deadline for registration is today. Contact Virginia Lerer at 2-3144 for information.

Wingin’ it with the Birders
Bird enthusiasts gather to track down the feathered friends that frequent campus.
At 7:30 a.m. Norman C. Ellstrand stood in the parking lot outside UCR’s Botanic Gardens. He seemed to ignore a threat of rain. “Sparrow on the ground,” he said, grabbing his binoculars and zooming in for a closer view. “Song sparrow. That’s a good one.” Ellstrand wrote the bird name on his list. He and his bird-study group are tracking the birds at UCR.

Conference Encourages Students to Aim High in Science
UCR was a platinum sponsor at the 2010 conference of the Society for the Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS), which took place Sept. 30-Oct. 3 at the Anaheim Convention Center.

Post-Employment Benefits Town To Be Hall Held on Campus
The campus will hold a town hall meeting to address questions from faculty, staff and retirees about the proposed changes to post-employment benefits. The meeting, which will be held 10-11:30 a.m., Friday, Oct. 15 in Highlander Union Building Room 302 north, is a follow-up to the UC online town hall meeting on Sept. 24.

ALIVE Program Provides Online Healthy Lifestyle Support
UCR staff and faculty and their families are invited to enroll in the online Alive! program, which encourages healthy lifestyles by asking participants to increase their physical activity and to improve their diet. Through the free program, enrollees sign up online, complete a short questionnaire and then receive weekly e-mails asking them to commit to one of several individualized goals for the coming week.

Campus Opens Center for Korean-American Studies
The Young Oak Kim Center for Korean American Studies at UC Riverside will lead the United States in studying issues related to the Korean diaspora and Korean-American identity issues, dignitaries and supporters said as the center celebrated its grand opening on Sept. 29.

New Sequencer Boosts Genome Research
UCR has purchased an Illumina HiSeq 2000 Next Generation DNA Sequencer — new instrumentation that permits researchers to sequence whole genomes at a cost and speed impossible just a few years ago. The $750,000 sequencer and computer hardware, purchased through a National Institutes of Health American Recovery and Reinvestment Act High End Instrumentation Grant, will arrive on campus before the end of the year.

Diversity Program Participants Honored
Eighty UCR staff members were guests at the chancellors residence on Sept. 28 for an event held to honor members of the campus Diversity Education and Leadership Initiative (DELI), graduates of the Making Excellence Inclusive diversity certificate program and their supervisors.

Town-Gown Conference
UCR hosted the 4th annual statewide Town-Gown Conference on Oct. 7 and 8 at the HUB. About 175 people attended the event.
