Chancellor Tells CUC About Importance of Higher Education
Today, the Citizen’s University Committee helps to ensure that UC Riverside continues on in the creation of the new School of Medicine, and provides student scholarships through determined fundraising efforts. UCR Chancellor Timothy P. White reflected on this long association at a gathering of the committee in the University Extension center, and noted to the 200 local leaders in attendance that the current budget issues facing California had the potential to undo more than a century of partnership that has made the entire UC system the world’s finest public university.

Town Hall Meeting to be Held on June 3
Chancellor Timothy P. White will host a Town Hall meeting starting at 12:10 p.m. Friday, June 3 in HUB 302, where he will provide an update on the budget. There is no town hall session in May.

Graduate Student Wins First Prize for Paper
Patrick Todd, a Ph.D. candidate in philosophy, has won first prize in the paper competition for the 2010 St. Thomas Summer Seminar, sponsored by the John Templeton Foundation. He received a $1,000 award for his paper, “Soft Facts and Ontological Dependence.”

Center Publishes First Book
The Young Oak Kim Center has published its first book, “Unsung Hero: The Story of Colonel Young Oak Kim.” The book is an English translation of the Korean title “The Beautiful Hero Young Oak Kim,” which was written by award-winning journalist Woo Sung Han. Edward T. Chang, professor of ethnic studies and director of the UCR center, translated the book.

American companies and organizations spend billions of dollars every year on leadership training for their managers. To improve job performance they ought instead to focus on what managers believe about their employees, a UCR study shows. How leaders view their employees tends to become a self-fulfilling prophecy, concludes Thomas Sy, assistant professor of psychology and a longtime business leadership consultant.
