School of Medicine Accreditation Delayed by Lack of Permanent State Investment
Ability of school to open for students in summer 2012 is in doubt pending resolution of state funding issues.
Accreditation for UCRís School of Medicine has been delayed because of concern about the lack of ongoing financial support from Sacramento.

Staff Assembly Honors Outstanding Campus Employees
UC Riverside Staff Assembly held its annual Outstanding Staff Awards event on June 8 at the chancellorís residence. The event honored the 26 staff members who were nominated by their colleagues and supervisors for the Staff Who Make A Difference, Tartan Soul, Commitment to Diversity and Volunteer of the Year awards.

Commencement: Celebrate Good Times and Achievements
The campus held its 57th annual commencement ceremonies from June 10 through 13. A record 4,500 students graduated this year. More than 28,000 family members and friends attended the seven ceremonies, which were held on the lawn area near Pierce Hall. Staff, parents and students were among the more than 250 volunteers who helped to make the event a success.

Chen Named Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator
Xuemei Chen, a professor of plant cell and molecular biology, has been named a Howard Hughes Medical InstituteĖGordon and Betty Moore Foundation (HHMI-GBMF) Investigator. Nationwide, only 15 HHMI-GBMF Investigators have been selected from among 239 applicants who have led independent laboratories at one of the approximately 200 U.S. medical schools, universities and research institutes that are eligible for the competition.

Student Wins Auschwitz Study Fellowship
Ph.D. student Jennifer Weed is one of 10 graduate students selected to participate in the Auschwitz Jewish Center Fellows Program, a project that addresses universal implications of the Holocaust. The fellowship program is operated by the Auschwitz Jewish Center Foundation. The center is operated by the Museum of Jewish Heritage from its New York City campus.

Third Class of Graduates from Diversity Certificate Program
More than 60 staff members have completed the six-month program.
Nineteen UCR staff members joined the 45 alumni from the first two years in completing the Making Excellence Inclusive: A UCR Diversity certificate program. The program, part of the 2010-11 Chancellorís Diversity Education Program: Making Excellence Inclusive, is a six-month course that involves interactive sessions on a variety of diversity related subjects, a capstone project with white paper, and a professional poster and public presentation.
