Wickstrom Named Athletics Director
From the University of Texas, he brings a strong background in Division I intercollegiate programs.
After a national search, Brian Wickstrom, senior associate athletic director (AD) from the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP), has been named incoming director of intercollegiate athletics at UC Riverside.

State Budget Could Lead to Tuition Increase
With cost-cutting and revenue-generating measures in place to fill the bulk of a billion-dollar budget gap resulting from steep cuts in state funding, the University of California staff is preparing to recommend to the Board of Regents that roughly one-quarter of the shortfall be offset with tuition and fee increases.

Rotary Club Donates $20,000 to Operation Education
The Rotary Club of Riverside has donated $20,000 to UC Riverside’s Operation Education, the largest contribution to date for the scholarship program that helps honorably separated U.S. military veterans with service-related injuries to earn their college degree.

School of Medicine Delayed a Year
State funding issues will mean that UC Riverside must wait a year on the opening of the School of Medicine. “Despite the enormous support of our community on and off campus, as well as friends around the state, I regret to inform you that state funding has not been provided for the UCR School of Medicine in the state’s 2011-12 budget,” said Chancellor Timothy P. White in a message to campus. “The budget now signed by the governor does not accommodate the Inland Southern California’s pressing need for this School of Medicine.”

New Title: Professor of the Graduate Division
The title of Professor of the Graduate Division (PGD) was recently created for the purpose of retaining and encouraging active participation of retiring faculty who are fully engaged in research, and departmental and campus activities and who wish to continue to contribute at UCR with distinction.

Revolutionary Science-learning Laboratory Opens
The inquiry-based Neil A. Campbell Science Learning Laboratory offers freshmen early research experience in genomic science.
An innovative laboratory for teaching science that opened last week on campus is designed to give freshmen the kind of research experience usually reserved for graduate students or undergraduate students in their junior or senior years. Located in the University Laboratory Building, the Neil A. Campbell Science Learning Laboratory is named after a well-known biologist and UC Riverside alumnus.
