UCR Launches Final Medical School Planning Phase
UCRís effort to launch a School of Medicine (SOM) is now entering its final stages of business planning. Several work groups led by longtime campus figures, community leaders, as well as people hired especially for their expertise in planning medical school programs, will meet regularly to plan the financial structure, the relationships with local medical facilities, and the classrooms and offices needed on campus.

First Phase of the Commons Expansion Nears Completion
The new Commons building is anything but common. The first phase of the 112,940 square-foot building, designed with help from a team of students, is set to open Sept. 24. The building will feature dining facilities, student lounges, meeting rooms and office spaces. A new conference center includes a room that can seat nearly 800 people, will allow the campus to hold conferences and other special events.

UC Pension Plan Contributions Postponed
UC officials credit the strong performance of the systemís $48 billion pension fund.
The University of California Office of the Treasurer announced preliminary figures that indicate UCís investments were up 19.1 percent during the past fiscal year, outperforming its benchmark by more than 1 percent. As a result, UC officials confirmed that pension contributions, which have not been required of employees for 17 years but were slated to resume last month, have been postponed for at least the rest of the 2007-08 fiscal year.

Campus Forum Date Changed
The next campus construction and safety forum is scheduled at noon, Wednesday, Sept. 5 at 3127 Hinderaker Hall. This forum was originally scheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 15.
