Poet Oates to Speak at Writers Week
Renowned author Joyce Carol Oates will be the next speaker in the Chancellor’s Distinguished Lecture Series on Feb. 8. She replaces the previously announced speaker, Nicaraguan poet Giaconda Belli.

UCR Gets Kudos for Campus Publications
UCR’s marketing director, Margene Mastin-Schepps was in Las Vegas this month and she brought back some campus winnings. The Council for Advancement in Support of Education (CASE) handed out awards to four of UC Riverside’s recent publications – including Inside UCR – at its annual conference, held Dec. 2 through 5 at the Mirage Hotel in Las Vegas.

Science and Kids - It’s Good Chemistry
Bahram Mobasher, a UCR professor of physics and observational astronomy, took space exploration and the cosmos to Mark Twain Elementary School in Riverside on Nov. 30. Mobasher, who came to UCR this year from the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore, is interested in raising awareness among elementary and high school students about the sciences and encouraging them to consider careers in science.

Science Fiction Writers Sought
UCR is launching its first Science Fiction Short Story Contest. Entries will be judged by writer Howard V. Hendrix, the author of 30 published science fiction short stories and novelettes, six novels and scholarly nonfiction in science fiction studies.
