Fresh Web Design Launched for CHASS
The College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences has a new look on the Web, the result of a team effort to recast nearly 1,000 Web pages that make up the college’s Web presence.

Forum Focuses on Serious Moment in State Budget
Chancellor Timothy P. White told a group of about 250 people who attended a campus forum on Nov. 24 that UCR’s annual budget will be trimmed by at least $8 million in the coming year due to concerns about California’s economic downturn.
“This is a serious moment for us, but it is a surmountable moment. The vision and aspiration that we all hold for this institution is one that we will not waver on as we work our way through this reduction of the general fund budget,” he said.Full story...
Rice Geneticist Honored by U.S. Department of Agriculture
Julia Bailey-Serres is lead recipient of the USDA National Research Initiative Discovery Award.
For her contributions to research leading to the development of flood-tolerant rice benefiting farmers in flood-prone areas worldwide, Julia Bailey-Serres, a professor of genetics, was recognized on Dec. 5 by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) as the lead recipient of the 2008 USDA National Research Initiative Discovery Award, one of the department’s most prestigious awards.Full story...
Guze Acting Vice Chancellor and Dean for Medical School
Phyllis A. Guze, a nationally recognized leader in medical education, has been appointed acting vice chancellor for medical sciences and dean of the School of Medicine.
Guze has been serving as executive director of medical school planning at UCR for the past year, and holds an academic appointment as professor of clinical medicine in the UCLA School of Medicine. She will not be a candidate for the permanent founding vice chancellor for medical sciences and medical school dean. A national recruitment for the position is under way. Digital Reconstruction of Mural Two Decades in Making
When Conrad Rudolph, professor of art history, began exploring the complexities of the 12th century mural “The Mystic Ark,” he expected to finish his work in two or three years.
Twenty years later, Rudolph has completed research that includes the digital reconstruction of a mural that is regarded as the most complex work of art from the Middle Ages.Full story...
