Palm Desert Campus: the Face of UCR in the Coachella Valley
Visitors to UCRís Palm Desert Graduate Center are greeted at the main building entrance with a display of photography on loan from UCRís California Museum of Photography, a colorful reminder of the role the Palm Desert Graduate Center plays for UCR in the Southern California desert. Whether it takes the form of a traveling art exhibit, a lecture by Pulitzer Prize-winners or a scholarship to a low-income student, the Palm Desert Graduate Center is an ambassador for UCR in the Coachella Valley, a physical presence to connect the Riverside campus in the desert.

Carolyn Stark
Stark Named Palm Desert Campus Executive Director
As of Jan. 1, Carolyn Stark became the full-time executive director of the UCR Palm Desert Graduate Center. Before coming to UCR in September 2005, Stark had been also serving as assistant executive vice chancellor and provost.

New Campus Web Site Receives Kudos
The campus also receives a silver award for a legislator acceptance letter program.
Itís official. The UC Riverside institutional home page is the best in the West, according to the Council for Advancement for Support of Education (CASE). The universityís redesigned page, which was launched in June, received the CASE District VII 2008 Award of Excellence Gold Medal for outstanding Web site communications. The award was presented during CASEís annual meeting in San Francisco on Dec. 8. The district VII region includes the states of Arizona, Hawaii, Nevada, Utah and California as well as the territory of Guam.

Thirteen is Lucky Number for AAAS Fellows
Thirteen UC Riverside researchers have been named fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). Including this yearís fellows, the total number of UCR faculty members who have been recognized with AAAS fellow distinction is 172.

Rhetoric Becomes Reality at MLK Birthday Celebration
The campusí annual candlelight vigil will be held at the carillon tower.
With this monthís inauguration of the nationís first African-American president, UCRís annual celebration of the birthday of Martin Luther King Jr. takes on a new character. It starts at 6 p.m. tomorrow, Jan. 15 at the UCR Bell Tower and continues with speakers and performances inside Watkins 1000.
