Staff Get Recognized for Having the Right Stuff
The annual event honors staff for outstanding contributions to the campus and the community.
On April 29, UCR’s Staff Assembly honored staff members who made outstanding contributions to the campus and the community at a Staff Recognition Awards Ceremony at the Highlander Union Building. The 54 staff members who were nominated by colleagues and supervisors were honored during the ceremony with certificates of recognition. Eight staff members were selected from the pool of nominees — four received Staff Who Make a Difference awards and four received Outstanding Staff awards.

Faculty Research Lecture Features Politics and Religion
The debate about the relation of politics and religion in the United States is set on the wrong course, Ivan Strenski, distinguished professor of religious studies and Holstein Endowed Chairholder, said in delivering the 57th Faculty Research Lecture on May 8.

Entomologist Elected Member of National Academy of Sciences
Alexander Raikhel, a professor of entomology, has been elected a member of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) for his excellence in original scientific research. Membership in the NAS is one of the highest honors given to a scientist or engineer in the United States. Raikhel will be inducted into the academy next April during its 147th annual meeting in Washington, D.C.

Town Hall Meeting Set
Chancellor White will hold another town hall meeting for students, faculty and staff from 9:30 to 11 a.m. May 21. The meeting will focus on discussing recommendations from the Budget Advisory Committee and the outcome of the May 19 Special Election.

California voters will consider several state propositions as part of a special election on Tuesday, May 19. One of them, Prop. 1A, may have a direct impact on the University of California.

An Odor, or Lack Thereof, Helps Ants Determine Death of Nest Mates
When an ant dies in an ant nest or near one, its body is quickly picked up by living ants and removed from the colony, thus limiting the risk of colony infection by pathogens from the corpse. The predominant understanding among entomologists was that dead ants release chemicals created by decomposition (such as fatty acids) that signal their death to the colony’s living ants.

Faculty Spend Academic Year At UCDC
Three UCR faculty who study globalization and its consequences will teach and conduct research at the UC Washington Center (UCDC) in 2009-10. The Washington program offers qualified undergraduate students from any major an opportunity to combine coursework, field research and work experience while living for a quarter in Washington, D.C.
